ALEGNTA
Alegnta (“Security”) was a radio talk show that premiered in December 2007 in Amharic on the National Service Radio of Ethiopia as part of the Whole Society Strategy accompanying the Menta Menged (“Crossroads”) radio serial drama.
Alegnta featured panel discussions led by youth and aired 114 programs in Ethiopia. During the program, young people called in with questions and concerns regarding social and health issues, and a panel, including other young people, adults, professionals, and/or teachers, discussed the topic raised by the caller. Topics included adolescent sexuality, substance addiction, the development of life skills, building self-confidence, developing communication skills, developing successful interpersonal relationships, reproductive health, harmful traditional practices, teen sexuality, matrimonial life, and childbearing. The title, Alegnta, was selected by Ethiopian youth. It is a word with multiple meanings in Amharic, such as “someone to lean on,” “security,” “guarantee,” and “safeguard.” The word indicates that the program provides an opportunity for young people to talk to one another, discuss their problems, and come up with solutions.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Alegnta allowed youth to discuss social and health issues, but it also helped inform parents and other adults about youth perspectives and challenges.
