Unveiling the Enduring Legacy of Gender Equality in Awra Amba Society: A Transformative Discussion in Addis Ababa

In a pivotal session held January 24, 2024, at Mado Hotel in Addis Ababa, we actively explored a research paper that delves into the enduring legacy of gender equality within the Awra Amba society. The eminent presence of honorable Dr. Zumra Nuru, the esteemed founder of the Awra Amba community, and his wife, Mrs. Nane, added profound insights to the discourse. This pioneering research, a collaboration between the Ethiopian Science Academy and the University of Gondar, received substantial support from the Packard Foundation.

Distinguished stakeholders and scholars actively engaged in this initiative, and Dr. Hailegnaw Eshete, the country director of the Population Media Center Ethiopia, took part in the discussion. The meeting addressed crucial facets, with the research presenters meticulously outlining the manifold ways in which gender equality has positively impacted the Awra Amba society, emphasizing its benefits for women.

The presentations brought forth compelling evidence showcasing women’s accomplishments across various domains, including the economy, education, leadership, decision-making, gender violence, family planning, and the division of labor. The discourse was rich with diverse perspectives, encapsulating a spectrum of ideas aimed at fostering equality and understanding.

During the proceedings, honorable Dr. Zumra and his wife emphasized a fundamental belief – the inherent equality of all individuals, transcending distinctions of race, gender, or age.
