The workshop marked an important moment in the country’s healthcare landscape as it delved deep into the establishment and operationalization of the Behavioral Surveillance Survey System (BSS).
The central objective of this workshop was to propel discussions on the vital thematic domains of the Behavioral Surveillance Survey System. These discussions encompassed behavioral dimensions, methodologies for measuring each thematic aspect, and mechanisms for change. UNICEF representatives set the stage with their warm welcome remarks, laying the foundation for an enlightening journey. EHEPA , presented an insightful overview of their organization’s mission and scope. The workshop introduced participants to the innovative realm of Behavioral Insights Research and Design (BIRDLAB), an innovative approach to catalyzing transformative changes in healthcare behavior.
One of the highlights of this workshop was he comprehensive concept note on the Behavioral Surveillance Survey System, which critically reviewed the existing Surveillance Survey System in the nation. The document dissected the underlying mechanisms and methodologies of Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBC). This provided a holistic perspective on the intricacies of fostering change within society.
As the workshop reached its second day, the participants were divided into four groups, engaging in interactive discussions and brainstorming sessions. This session sought to prioritize themes based on their perceived importance, feasibility, and potential for catalyzing behavioral change. Among the topics discussed were site selection, stakeholder engagement, resource mobilization, and recommendations, all aimed at advancing the BSS initiative.
The Ethiopian Health Education and Promotion Professionals Association (EHEPA) was established in 2022. Their mission to enhance the quality of life for Ethiopian citizens through the promotion of healthy behaviors, disease prevention, and the improvement of treatment-seeking behavior and adherence to medical services is nothing short of inspirational.
This historic consultative workshop witnessed the participation of key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health (MoH), the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), the Population Media Center, UNICEF, Regional Health Bureaus, and a distinguished assembly of SBC and public health professionals. Their combined wisdom and experience were invaluable in shaping the future of the Behavioral Surveillance Survey System.
In a symphony of ideas and shared experiences, the Population Media Center and other stakeholders contributed their unique insights and knowledge to the BSS initiative, further cementing the collaborative spirit of this extraordinary gathering. The workshop has set the stage for a transformative journey in Ethiopian healthcare, where the BSS promises to be a game-changer in advancing healthcare practices, saving lives, and improving the well-being of the nation’s citizens.
